Help someone start '...moving forward'

VOLUNTEERING

Our Day Centre (temporarily closed) runs on Christian values and we respect our volunteers no matter what background or belief. We are looking for people who are willing to support, listen, and encourage the guests. Depression, loneliness, alcohol and drug misuse are some of the issues and challenges that guest’s experience. Also we need help with tasks such as setting up and clearing away, cleaning areas, serving food, helping with form filling and assisting with other activities. We look forward to hearing from you!

Understanding 'Homelessness'

Homelessness is often a term which is only used for a small group of truly homeless people, rough sleepers, but there are a variety of situations when someone may be classed as being homeless. These include:
• Sleeping rough (on the streets)
• Living in temporary accommodation i.e. a hostel or bed and breakfast
• Living in a squat (or squatting, which consists of unlawfully occupying an abandoned or unoccupied area of land and/or building).
• Temporarily staying with family or friends
• Living in poor conditions that have an adverse affect on their health.

How might someone become homeless?

• Eviction or discharge from hospital or prison
• Loss of job
• Relationship breakdown
• Health problems

Homeless can affect anyone. However, the following are groups of people who are more valuable:
• People with addictions
• Young people leaving home for the first time
• People with physical or mental health problems
• People leaving care

Again, homelessness can affect anyone. The people who come to JCC may have some of the following characteristics:
• Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence
• Complex issues i.e. drugs, alcohol, and mental health
• Challenging behaviour i.e. poor social skills and communication skills
• Mistrust of authority figures
